"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."

Today's Gospel offers us a vital reminder that we are called to do more than label ourselves as "devout Catholics," but instead, we must live our lives imitating our God. We imitate God not by attempting to be the master over others but by imitating the Father's actions, revealed especially by Jesus.
Today's reading from Samuel illustrates God's justice by the mercy practiced by David when he had the upper hand over his rival. That action is radical, especially in a world that places great value on power or strength. Saint Paul reminds us today that we "bear the image" of Christ, the new Adam, meaning we are called to be different than our former way of life or the way that is "normal" in society.
Jesus challenges us to interact with our foes differently than the retaliatory way the world may encourage. If we dare to live the Gospel courageously, we must step outside of what is "normal." Don't be afraid to be different or holy! For example, do you see how the world may disregard each human's sacredness or seek to tear apart others with different opinions? We cannot do that; we must be different.
The Lord is kind and merciful, as the Psalmist sings. How well are we imitating Him?
My Lord and my God, I trust in You; help me be like You.
