Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

 

"You will know the truth and the truth will set you free"; you've likely heard this bit of Scripture quoted before. Though the statement is simple to understand, its context reveals a deeper truth. Look at the words Jesus says before that famous phrase. They seem to suggest that doing God's will is a prerequisite for encountering that truth that sets us free. This seems so counterintuitive. Generally, truth is something we believe and belief in it influences our actions. Here Jesus seems to suggest that doing the will of the Father comes first. As He's prone to do, Jesus appears to be turning things on their head. This should be a comfort to us. If you have trouble encountering God's truth, start by doing His will.
