Discerning the Answer to Prayer

Exodus 16:14-15

and when the layer of dew evaporated, fine flakes were on the surface of the wilderness, fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground. On seeing it, the Israelites asked one another, "What is this?" for they did not know what it was. But Moses told them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat."

The lines preceding these verses set the stage for this famous miracle. In short, the Israelites were hangry. They left the life they had grown accustomed to in Egypt to be led into the desert by a man they were losing confidence in. Showing that He had not abandoned his servant and people, God sent quail and manna to feed them. At first, the Hebrews didn't know what to make of the latter. They didn't recognize it; this bread from heaven was unlike the bread they were used to. It was new and odd but it was what the Lord gave them so they ate and had their fill. Sometimes, we bring God such a specific desire in prayer that we may not even recognize when it's answered. A man who prays for a $1,000 check to appear on his doorstep might not see a job offer as an answer to prayer but it very well could be. Our God is a good father and as such he doesn't give us exactly what we want all the time because He knows what we need more than we do. He knows what is best for us. Let us always strive to be instruments of God's plan rather than making Him an instrument of ours.
