Catching Up With Old Friends

By Rob
...they knew you before you accepted Jesus

Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, "Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter's son? MT 13:54-55a

Have you ever been to a high-school reunion and met old friends you hadn't seen in 10 or more years?  You knew each other in your formative years. And maybe, as you catch up with each other, you learn of path your friends have taken and them of you. You reflect on some good times together, and maybe recall a thing or two which you'd never consider doing now. I remember doing some things during my youth that were reckless and senseless. Maybe you can relate to this.

As Matthew closes out his 13th chapter he writes about a time when Jesus went back to his home town and taught in the synagogue. His words amazed his old friends who wondered how "the son of a carpenter" could have gained so much wisdom. It wasn't like Jesus could have gone off to college or taken an online theology course. He was teaching them. And some began to doubt him and maybe felt offended by his teaching.

As you share your faith, there will be those who won't listen to you or even debate your beliefs. Possibly it's because they knew you before you accepted Jesus and are not able to see (or accept) how God's grace has transformed you. Don't be discouraged. Stay firm in your faith and show love to your friends. It may take time for them to feel your sincerity and begin to seek God's love in their lives. You are an important part of that process.
