This is probably one of Jesus' most widely cited analogies. Just as a branch's purpose is to bear fruit, so our purpose is to let the love of God grow in us into spiritual fruit.

John 15:4

Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.

 

This is probably one of Jesus' most widely cited analogies. Just as a branch's purpose is to bear fruit, so our purpose is to let the love of God grow in us into spiritual fruit. Fruit is such a rich symbol for what the love of God brings into the world through us. Just think of what fruit does. It feeds. As branches, we get to take part in nourishing the world with this food it desperately needs. Even those unaware of the source of this fruit (Jesus), can benefit from the nutrients it provides. God, in his wisdom and love, has invited us to take part in His work of 'feeding' His children with what they need. So, be fruitful today! There's no telling how the world could change by someone 'tasting' the fruit you've born.
