Then he said to them, "Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?" But they remained silent. Looking around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart, he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out and his hand was restored.

 

Think about your hand for a second. Think of all the things you can do, how much autonomy you enjoy because of your hands. You can open doors, text, and feed yourself, among other things. Now, think about losing the ability to use a hand. It would be jarring and make your life significantly harder, right? You would feel, at least temporarily, you're not fully yourself in losing its use. I like to think that Jesus was not only healing this man's hand but also restoring his sense of self somewhat. This points to a larger truth about Christ. He came not only so we might be healed from sin but discover our true identity in Him. We are not only healed by Christ but adopted into His family and into a new life!
