...that wasn't very nice

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
He wasn't a teddy bear. His message wasn't an amalgamation of platitudes and self-confidence builders...

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside, you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing. Matthew 23:27-28

He wasn't a teddy bear. His message wasn't an amalgamation of platitudes and self-confidence builders. His corrections weren't intended only for a past time or for someone else. Jesus wasn't always very nice, He loved the scribes and Pharisees enough to speak in a not nice way to them. Jesus upset people. He bothered people. He challenged people. He caused significant questioning in those who disagreed with Him and even those who followed Him. To know Him and to experience Him is incredibly consequential. Do you allow Jesus to speak fiercely into your life? Do you allow His words and teachings to trouble you? Is Jesus a person that you have come to know or a concept which you've constructed for your life?

Jesus, I desire to know you more truly and give you permission to speak into my life.
