Wooden Beams Galore

By Fr. Mike Muhr
If you imagine this metaphor it's hilarious...

"Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye." Luke 6:42b

If you imagine this metaphor it's hilarious. Once I tried to help the congregation see this in a physical way. I asked our maintenance department for a 2 by 6 that was about 6-feet long. When I started to talk about Jesus directing us to remove the beam from our eyes first, I put the 6-foot beam up near my eye sticking straight out. People laughed.  When I started to walk towards someone to pull out their "splinter," they ducked. (This was pre-arranged.)   The genius of this image is that Jesus is giving all of us this instruction, so we all have wooden beams. Imagine that scene as we are trying to pull out splinters and knocking out each others' eyes. How clever the Lord is! I've got enough to do just working on my faults. There's a whole 6-foot beam that should keep me busy for a while.

Lord, heal me that I may see!
