Will you try?

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting...

When the men came to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’” At that time he cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. And he said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.

Luke 7:20-23

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” This quote from G.K. Chesterton resonates with the difficulty there is in not taking offense at/with Jesus. You see, if Jesus truly is who He says He is and who the Church professes He is, then that changes everything. It means I can’t take him as a self-help guru or kind deed doer. If Jesus is the “One” that humanity awaits it means that I must follow Him unreservedly and permit my life to be conformed to His. When Christianity is lived in this way, it lacks nothing.

How might I allow Jesus to be more fully my Lord today than yesterday?

Jesus, give me the grace to want to follow you.
