Why Do We Vent?

By Teresa Peterson
I recently saw a post on social media about women who love to complain and "speak to a manager"...

"Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged."

James 5:9

I recently saw a post on social media about women who love to complain and “speak to a manager.” I have to admit, I have been that woman. But today we hear in Sacred Scripture that we are not to complain, or we will be judged.  To be honest, most of the times I have complained had to do with my need to be heard. In other words, I needed to vent.  However, I think God is letting me know that venting in such a way is not fruitful for the sake of the Gospel. We also hear in today’s first reading that, “Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered.”  God is encouraging me to stay focused on the end goal of holiness and not the daily moments of annoyance. When I need to be heard, it’s better for me to turn to God. The Lord listens to me. This is infinitely more valuable than venting.

Do you find yourself complaining? How does this damage your relationship with others and with God?

Lord, Thank you for listening to me when I need to be heard. Amen.
