'Who do people say that the Son of Man is?' They replied, 'Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?'" - Matthew 16:13-15
Who do you say that Jesus is? It seems like a silly question, but when you look closely it becomes glaringly obvious that Jesus' proper role in our lives can get distorted. Is Jesus a distant memory; someone that you used to know but have become distant towards? Is Jesus someone that you recognize on Sundays and lose sight of during the week? We can find our answer to this question in the way that we live our lives.
In today's Gospel we see a number of different thoughts on who Jesus is, but it is Peter who gets it right when he says, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Do we model our lives on this realization? If Jesus is who He says He is, he must become the center of our lives. On this Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, let us celebrate the men and women of the early Church that gave their lives to live out this Truth.
Who do you say that Jesus is?
Jesus, give us the gift of faith to live our lives in the Truth that You are the Son of the living God.
