Who do you listen to?

By Zachary Brasseur
There are so many voices speaking to us all the time...

“But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.”

John 10:5

There are so many voices speaking to us all the time. I’m sure you have your favorite voices that you listen to on the way to work, at the gym, while you’re cooking dinner, or getting ready for bed. What do those voices say? Or maybe a better question is, whose voice are you listening to?  Jesus describes his relationship with his disciples like a shepherd to his sheep. It is a fact that sheep will not listen to a voice that is not their shepherd’s. Using this metaphor, we can draw the conclusion that a disciple is the same. A disciple is one who listens for Jesus’ voice and turns away from anything that is not of him. We have to discern the voices that we listen to and ask if they are of God, or not. This discernment is ongoing and we don’t always get it right, but we can trust that the Lord is indeed speaking to us and wants us to hear him.

Do I make time to listen to Jesus in prayer?

Father, you gave us your Son so that we could see you face to face and speak with you as friends. Give us your Holy Spirit too so that we can have the courage to reach out to you in our time of need.
