Who Did You See?

By John Morris
We know that they often change their messages to placate....

Luke 7:24

Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John. "What did you go out to the desert to see—a reed swayed by the wind?"

Let me start by saying this is not a political endorsement for either side. Over the last year we saw many candidates (both locally and nationally) making huge promises to placate the voters. When polls or media pushed, candidates often altered their positions. We know by history, that once in office, their promises often change.

As Christians we often mean well, but life's circumstances change and we often have our values compromised, leading us to sinful decisions. In today's reading, Jesus asks the people regarding John the Baptist what they went to the desert to see. Maybe they were thinking they would see a prophet in fine robes, telling them what they wanted to hear to meet their circumstances. Instead, they found a man giving truth that maybe they didn't want to hear. John was preparing the way for eternal life by giving directions to get there. John's words were unwavering, unlike the politicians of the day (and today). This Advent we need to pray for wisdom to follow the truth that scriptures proclaim, including loving others as we love ourselves.
