Where is Your Trust

By John Morris
Let's take 'In God We Trust' off of our money...

Jeremiah 7:28

Say to them: This is the nation which does not listen to the voice of the LORD, its God, or take correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech.

Over the past century, philosophers and theologians have opined that our society is moving toward a more humanistic view.  We are now seeing the effects of that view:  God and the Ten Commandments being removed from public places; in fact no religion or displays in any government place.  No prayer in schools.  Some say, "here's an idea, let's take 'under God,' out of our Pledge of Allegiance.  While we're at it, let's take 'In God We Trust' off of our money. After all we put our trust more in the almighty dollar than in our creator."  In fact there is not creator, they say.  We can't go to church this weekend because the kids have a sports tournament, dance recital or what not.  It's too nice outside, so the outdoors are my church.

Jeremiah's proclamation in today's first reading serves as a history lesson for us.  The destruction of nations and peoples comes when they turn from God and put themselves above our creator and savior.  We lose sight of what is right and good.  We should take this period of Lent to refocus our attention to what is important and to those principles and tenants of our faith.  Instead of trusting kings, presidents, legislators, etc., let's put our trust in God.  Pray for the vision to stay on the right road of faith and not veer off to the secular point of view.
