When endurance matters most

By Donald Amodeo
"Bad times make good people,"...

"You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised." - Heb 10:36

"Bad times make good people," Dr. Peter Kreeft, a professor of philosophy at Boston College and The King's College, says in one of his many excellent books. Over the past year, I've met no shortage of people who passionately lament the lack of justice in our world. We yearn to see God's will be done "on Earth as it is in Heaven," yet at the same time, we ought not to be surprised when a post-Christian world acts like a post-Christian world.

In today's reading from St. Paul's letter to the Hebrews, the Apostle tells us: "You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised." That endurance comes easy when victory is within sight, but what about when God's promise seems distant and when everywhere we look, we see signs of evil conquering good? Bad times make good people. Do we give in to despair? Or are we willing to let God stretch us, to endure the darkness bravely so that his light shines all the brighter?

Are we willing to let God stretch us, to endure the darkness bravely so that His light shines all the brighter?

Lord give us the strength to endure in faith when the victories of evil seem overwhelming.
