When You Know, You Know

By Fr. Lou Turcotte
There are certain times in life when you just "know" something...

"I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God."

1 John 5:13

There are certain times in life when you just “know” something: you realize that you are in love, or you that you must do the right thing, or that you have a particular calling. How do you know? Well, there are usually reasons - you can explain why a choice might pay off, why this person is a good match for you, or why you might be gifted for a vocation. But most often, those explanations don’t really explain how you “know.” You seem to know it in your heart, or your gut. Every fiber of your being seems to be a part of that “knowing” confidence.

It’s that knowledge that John speaks of in our first reading today when he wants us “to know that you have eternal life.” And it’s that same confident belief that drives the leper to Jesus for healing – he KNEW that Jesus could heal him! In the same way, today we are invited into a “knowing.” We have heard the story of Christ’s birth, we “know” the story of His life. But do we believe it? Do we “know,” in our heart and our gut, that it is true?

What in your life has given you confidence in God's love and plan for you?

Lord Jesus, help us to know, with every fiber of our being, that you are the victor over sin and death!
