What Is Stopping Us

By Br. Lucius Amarillas
Today's readings illustrate a sudden conversion of heart and a reminder of...

"What is to prevent my being baptized?" - Acts 8:36

Today's readings illustrate a sudden conversion of heart and a reminder of what will nourish those who have decided to change their way of life and walk according to the Lord's ways. We Christians have publicly pledged that we will live according to how the Lord demands, differently from the rest of the world. During this Easter season, we are reminded of that commitment through our recent renewal of our faith and the catechumens' recent baptisms.

As we proceed further into this holy Easter season, let's ask ourselves how well we have been living that commitment. When we receive the Eucharist, the "living bread," do we indeed publicly profess that we believe, not just in front of the minister offering us Communion but also to the world in which we live? Do our friends, family, parishioners, coworkers, or fellow religious encounter us living our baptismal promises? If not, it is not too late to stop and turn towards the Lord. Look at our first reading; it was not too late for the eunuch to turn back from the world and choose Christ or choose to partake in that "bread of life". Nothing stopped him; what is stopping us?

God, come to our assistance, that we may live faithfully for and with You.
