You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
Spaghetti models. Satellite imagery. Storm surge. Low pressure, high pressure, gulf sea breeze. If you've lived in Florida the last few months, you've become somewhat of an armchair meteorologist. But weather prediction has been going on for centuries. Jesus talks about weather forecasting in today's reading from Luke. He addresses the crowd that they have developed skill in predicting that if the wind is out of the south, it will be dry; if the clouds form in the west, then look for rain. But Jesus turns this by saying that nature and weather show you signs of what is to come, yet you can't see the signs of what is to come with your eternal life that is standing right in front of you.
Jesus has been teaching and preaching. He has referenced the prophets and the stories of the old testament, yet his followers still don't get it. They are blinded or don't want to accept what he is saying. It's like in Florida when the hurricanes come. The forecasters and government tell you, in fact, beg you to leave. If Jim Cantore shows up, you know there's trouble. Yet people are stubborn and don't want to accept the truth. Same with Jesus. No wonder he calls them hypocrites. Yet we are hypocrites also. We have been taught God's way, yet we go off and do our own thing, putting our trust in ourselves and in worldly things. Pray today to put your trust in God, so that when a situation arises, that you turn to the Father for guidance, asking the Holy Spirit to come into the situation to show you the way. Like an approaching hurricane, Jesus tells us that the end will come one day. Are you ready? Do you have your eternity kit ready?
