"That they may all be one." John 17:21a
As Christians, as Catholics we are called to be one in faith. Seven weeks into the Easter Season how are we doing? Jesus knew there were times that would be tough for his early followers, and it is true also today, "I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one" (Jn 17: 20-21a). Outwardly proclaiming a Catholic identity can lead to physical or mental persecution, but we can have confidence that Jesus is with us; he prayed for US in his prayer for unity. We may not face the persecutions of St. Paul in today's first reading (Acts 23:6-11), but even there Christ reassures Paul to take courage in proclaiming Christ's mission to the Jews and Romans. This is our theme, to be in unity, to be as one proclaiming Christ, inviting others to encounter the Jesus we have come to know in our church, in our homes, in our lives. We can't go it alone, and we don't have to, "that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them" (Jn 17:26b). As Paul did, we just need to trust, trust, trust.
Do I make unifying steps in my church, home and community?
Jesus, you prayed for the unity of those who believe; help me to trust that you will be in me as I go through my day proclaiming your love through my unifying actions.
