The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it.
Today the Church celebrates the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, two of the most important men in the New Testament. Both had unique callings and personalities. Peter, a fisherman by trade, was probably not considered a leader at first glance. He led a rough life, probably smelled like fish most of the time and had trouble controlling his tongue and emotions. Paul was probably more educated, outspoken against the Christians sect at first, but after encounters with the Lord and other witnesses to Christ, was converted. Both men became outspoken leaders in the church. Both had unique gifts and talents. They were called and answered the call. Their callings were different but they ended up at the same place. Sure they disagreed about some things, but in the end, worked together for the good of the Church, ultimately giving their lives in the name of Jesus.
All of us are born with gifts and talents, and all of us are called. Sometimes the call is subtle; other times it bangs like a gong. Do we hear it, or is it drowned out by the sound and distractions of the world? Do we answer it, or are we afraid? Maybe we don't know if it's a real call or something else. Many times we need multiple proofs to finally be convinced that it is the Lord calling us. Blessed are those who, like Peter, immediately dropped his nets and followed. Blessed are those also, who might be stubborn, but eventually turn their hearts to God. Bless are those who work for the Church, despite disagreements and theological disputes, in the end, give God praise and bring others into the fold. Let Saints Peter and Paul be examples for all of us.
