Trust His Cross

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Sometimes we are called to entrust others to the Cross...

Matthew 20:20-22

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.

He said to her, "What do you wish?" She answered him, "Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom."

Jesus said in reply, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" They said to him, "We can."

Sometimes we are called to entrust others to the Cross.

She didn't rescue them. The mother of the Sons of Zebedee wanted glory for her Sons. When Jesus makes clear that the cost of Glory is to take His own cup, she could have rescued her Sons. She could've bailed them out and saved them from the suffering required by the cup of Christ. Yet we know from sacred tradition that she did not, she allowed her sons to be identified with the Pierced and sorrowful heart of Christ. May we allow those who are closest to us to enter more deeply into the Lord's heart this Lenten Season and trust that His Cross will bring them Glory.
