True Greatness

By Caleb Malec
By senior year of high school, I began to read Scripture more and this Gospel passage has always stuck out to me because it is often titled...

"Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side, Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

Luke 9:47-48

By senior year of high school, I began to read Scripture more and this Gospel passage has always stuck out to me because it is often titled, "True Greatness" or "The Greatest in the Kingdom." Of course, as I was maturing and growing into a young man I wanted to know how to be better, how to be GREAT. But then I cross this passage saying I have to be like a child? Someone who has no worldly authority, power, or honor?  "Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side," in the place of highest honor, in the desired position of His disciples. Jesus proposed that "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." Jesus wants us to do all we can for everyone, no matter if they are someone without worldly authority, power, or honor, such as a child. In doing so we are made great because none of that matters in our Lord's eyes.

Where in your life will you seek to serve the Lord in the small, minute things of everyday life?

Lord Jesus Christ, help me to serve You joyfully no matter the size of the task. St. Vincent de Paul, Pray for us.
