To be Saved

By Elvi J. Moya
After being severely humiliated and beaten for preaching Jesus Christ, Paul and Silas are placed into the "innermost cell" of a prison

Acts 16:30

Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

After being severely humiliated and beaten for preaching Jesus Christ, Paul and Silas are placed into the "innermost cell" of a prison. One would assume these two men would demand justice; fight for their freedom; at the very least try to negotiate for their release. But no, they deliver themselves up to the One who judges justly while praying and singing in the abyss of a seemingly desolate space. And then what happens? It's as if creation itself makes a demand for justice! As the earth quaked at the scandal of Christ's crucifixion, so does it tumble in frustration when God's little ones are persecuted for His sake.

But is that all? No, God also has his eye on a man who did not expect he was in need of mercy. The jailer finds himself suicidal due to his thought that the prisoners had gone free after the earth quaked for justice. Is it not amazing that, in response to the jailer's practical question, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?", Paul responds with the spiritual claim that lead to his imprisonment? Beautifully, the jailer is himself set free by becoming a child of God through holy Baptism.
