To Trust in the Lord

By Mark DeSio
We are like Daniel, especially in those moments when...

Daniel 6:24

"Unhurt because he trusted in his God."

In today's first reading, we learned that a group of men found the prophet Daniel praying at home. The king had prohibited all prayer for thirty days; anyone caught praying was cast into the lion's den to be eaten alive. Daniel was thrown into the den and came face to face with a hungry lion, but an angel closed the lion's mouth and Daniel remained "unhurt because he trusted in his God."

We are like Daniel, especially in those moments when it seems as if the Lord has abandoned us to the three enemies of our soul: the world, the flesh, and the devil. Saint Peter warns us that the devil is "like a roaring lion, seeking for someone to devour."  However, if we trust in the Lord as Daniel did, even if we find ourselves face to face with this lion, we will remain unharmed.

What is trust? What does trust look like concretely? To trust in the Lord is to praise him and thank him in all circumstances. So on this Thanksgiving Day and every day of our lives, let us praise and thank the Lord for his mercy endures forever. Amen.
