To Live Without Grudges

By Fr. Mike Muhr
For those who have seen the movie Godfather 2...

"So now, do not fear. I [Joseph] will provide for you and for your children." By thus speaking kindly to them, he reassured them." Genesis 50: 21

For those who have seen the movie Godfather 2, you know that Michael Corleone holds grudges. He even kills his own brother. The movie ends with him sitting sullenly all alone as the violins drone on.  Contrast this with the magnanimity of Joseph in today's first reading. He does not hold a grudge. The unity and wellbeing of his family are number one.   I had a spiritual director who once told me that when love touches the pain, there are often tears. We hear of Joseph's healing tears today as he reassures his family and sets them and himself free!

Many people tear up just hearing this story of Joseph. If you do, what pain is God's love touching in you?

Lord, release us from our grudges.
