To Keep Quiet

By Donald Amodeo
Good things come to those who keep their mouths shut...

MT 28:10

Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me."

Good things come to those who keep their mouths shut. It was true for the soldiers who kept silent about the Resurrection, and it is true for us today when one is pressured to "keep your religion to yourself." Things will be easier among friends and coworkers and even within your own family if you just keep God at a safe and silent distance.

Despite being a seminarian, I still occasionally feel that awkward pressure to just ignore God rather than make the Sign of the Cross and say grace before eating a meal at a restaurant. Modern society is fine with you being religious, just so long as you keep it private. As my family has experienced before, praying in public can earn you remarks such as "keep your grace out of my face."

And yet, just as the Apostles couldn't possibly keep quiet about the miracle of the Resurrection, we can't help but glorify the Lord upon experiencing his grace transforming our lives. The occasional snide remark, or worse, is ultimately a small price to pay in light of the awesome price that has been paid to redeem us.
