“…do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home”
Matthew 18:20
I don’t love cleaning, but man does that change when I have a guest coming over.
When I know a co-worker is riding with me to lunch the next day, I clean my entire car out and make sure it looks neat and tidy for their comfort. When my best friend comes into town, I break out the windex and the vacuum… I even wiped down the baseboards! (My mama would be so proud.)
So naturally, when I think about inviting Jesus and Mary into my heart… my natural inclination is that it’s not tidy enough. There’s a lot I can clean up to truly prepare for Jesus’ coming. How could the King of Kings be comfortable in the un-made bed that is my heart? How could our Blessed Mother feel welcomed in the messy floors of my life?
But the mess doesn’t scare Jesus or Mary. It doesn’t even hinder them. I don’t know if you remember, but Mary birthed Jesus in a barn! Behind, the nice, clean, tidy inn. Mary isn’t scared or intimidated by your mess. She’ll meet you right in the middle of it. And Mary, like the good mother that she is, can even help clean up that mess.
How can I invite Mary into my heart? Are there ways that she can help to clean up my mess?
Jesus, thanks for not minding the mess. Mary, we ask for your intercession and help as we continue to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus.
