Throwing Stones Is Easier

By Francesca
At the end of our Gospel reading today, the people began throwing stones at Jesus...

“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.” John 8:52

At the end of our Gospel reading today, the people began throwing stones at Jesus. Could you imagine being so offended by the words of a teacher that you begin to stone him? Worse yet, you begin to throw stones at the Messiah?

Jesus was full of “unpopular” opinions because being a Christ-follower isn’t always easy. In today’s first reading, the Lord changes Abram’s name to Abraham and makes a covenant with him. The only thing the Lord asks in return from Abraham is to “keep my covenant throughout the ages.”

Keeping that covenant is hard. Keeping His word is hard. But, as Christ tells us, this is the path to eternal life. Sure, throwing stones is easier, but today you have the opportunity to choose to keep His word on your journey to His cross. Embrace the difficult path.

When it becomes difficult to keep God’s word, do you work harder to embrace the difficult path? Or do you begin to throw stones?

Dear Jesus, give us the strength to keep Your word today.
