The vast unknown

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
In every encounter with any person, there is so much which is unknown...

But you, Bethlehem-Ephrathaha least among the clans of Judah, From you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; Whose origin is from of old, from ancient times.

Micah 5:1

In every encounter with any person, there is so much which is unknown. Each person is a mystery. While we grasp at so many ways to categorize another person, each label or categorization fails to express the reality of the individual. A human life is a vast unknown. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her life and the life which would come from her was a vast unknown to those around her. I am sure at times that her life was even a mystery to herself. May we like Mary engage with that vast unknown before us and have reverence for the mystery which far exceeds any status or category.

Who in my life could I treat as a greater mystery?

Father, help me to recognize the mystery of the people around me.
