The meaning of a stole

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me

The meaning of a "stole"

It's a simple enough garment…kind of looks like a scarf. It's the symbol of the priestly office and can also be a symbol of those baptized into the priesthood of Jesus Christ. This simply thing called a stole reminds us of this invitation by the Lord. It is a yoke that we place upon ourselves—knowing that Christ wears the other side. I wonder though if we too often think we can take this yoke on and off. I'll plow my own way until I get tired and want to be yoked again to Christ. I'll put the yoke on until things don't go how I want them and will try and take control of the work again. The stole reminds us that we are invited to be yoked to Christ in every moment—not just when we are weary.
