The mark of the disciple

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
The life of one who worships the living God is unlike any other life...

In the land of my captivity, I give thanks, and declare his power and majesty to a sinful nation. As for me, I exalt my God, my soul exalts the King of heaven, and rejoices all the days of my life. Let all sing praise to his greatness, let all speak and give thanks in Jerusalem.     Tobit 13:6,7-8

The life of one who worships the living God is unlike any other life. Belief in God isn't simply about holding to a different set of morals. It is even as simple as having a differing philosophical or theological conception of reality. The mark of one who worships the living God is the mark of gratitude. They become defined by an experience with the God who has revealed themselves. A disciple's life is a response to the one who has Loved them, shown mercy towards them, sanctified and enlivened them. Our goal in faith is to be so filled with this relationship with the living God that even amidst captivity we exalt in Him and rejoice in Him. Truly then the witness of our lives is far more than following a different self-help or actualization guide than our neighbor.

When can I exercise greater gratitude in my life?

Father, help me to live my faith with greater gratitude.
