The little bishop of Philadelphia

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Because he chose to remain in Love he accomplished Love’s works...

We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love.

1 Jn. 4:16-18

Because he chose to remain in Love he accomplished Love’s works. St. John Neumann, an immigrant to this country, would structure one of its most influential institutions. As a priest, he ministered to thousands of souls. As a bishop, he lead the country’s largest diocese. Thanks to him we have the diocesan school systems. Thanks to him the forty hours devotion exists in our country. Amazingly he accomplished these amazing things by remaining in Love. He abided in a love that was consequential in his own life. He remained close to the One who loved him. He surrendered control and the plans of his own life to Incarnate God. He let Love, not a hypothetical, theoretical or self-determined love, live and move within him. The little bishop of Philadelphia is a reminder to us of what amazing things are accomplished when we remain in Love.

Where do I need to relinquish control of my own life’s plans in order to live more freely in Love?

Jesus, grant me the grace to live more deeply in your Love today, in your love for me and your love for others.
