The Yodeling Goat

By John Morris
The old goat understood that life was precious...

Luke 17:34-35

I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left."

One of my kid's favorite childhood movies was Hoodwinked, a cartoon detective story about Little Red Riding Hood.  One of the characters was a yodeling goat that sang a catchy tune called "Be Prepared."  The hook of the song went, "Be prepared, be prepared. This lesson must be shared.  Unless you got a spare, you should handle life with care.  So be prepared, be prepared."  The old yodeling goat was always dodging trouble, but was always prepared for what life might bring him.  The goat understood that life was precious and we shouldn't take risks, so be prepared for whatever might come.

Jesus is also telling us in today's gospel from Luke to be prepared.  The end is coming for all of us and we cannot avoid it.  But we should live life to the fullest in Christ and be prepared for what is to come in the next life.  This is certainly a sobering passage, and one that should not be taken lightly.  Jesus is encouraging us to be prepared.  The saints, the church fathers and our clergy are always reminding us to get our lives in order, because and the end of the day, there will be judgement for all of us.  Are you prepared for that?  If not, then it's time to get your life straightened out so that you are prepared.  Go to church this weekend and make a good confession.
