The Silent Treatment

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Notice that God did not smite Jonah for being angry...

Jonah 4:1

But this greatly displeased Jonah, and he became angry

I can't imagine what it's like when a parent receives the silent treatment. A child gets upset at their parent over something, they're angry and they are hurting because of something that the Child has perceived as an injustice. Thus the silent treatment commences and the parent is rendered powerless. Notice that God did not smite Jonah for being angry, God doesn't stop communicating to Jonah, God does mute out the conversation with Jonah. Rather, God invites Jonah deeper into relationship. There are plenty of times in life in which we might be angry at God, that we don't understand what is happening or perhaps we feel that God as failed us. Don't give God the silent treatment—it is okay to bring Him your anger, your hurt, your fear. In fact, like Jonah, it may become the moment in which God draws you more deeply into relationship.
