The Place of Dependence

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
A comfort zone is a nice thing...

"Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work." - 2 Cor 9:6-8

A comfort zone is a nice thing. Having security in our plans, our lives and our futures certainly feels safer than the alternative. But a comfort zone in your walk with Christ—saying "God, you can call me this far but no further" —is the opposite of sowing bountifully. Keeping the Lord limited to our security, insurance plans or comfort zones unfortunately keeps Him limited in His generosity. "I'll follow You Jesus, as long as it's where I want to go."  When we sow sparingly, we reap sparingly.

To sow bountifully means going outside of your comfort zone. It means allowing your heart to be led to a place of dependence on Him instead of dependence of yourself. It means sharing your faith when you are unsure how it will go. It means tithing from your need instead of your surplus. It means taking time for prayer instead of social media. It means going beyond our comfort zone and allowing God to call us to dependence.

How can I step out in faith this week?

Jesus, help me to use the gifts You've given me bountifully.
