"Enter through the narrow gate." Mt. 13a
In reflecting on today's readings, I find them weaving together, as I ponder Jesus' words to "enter through the narrow gate".
In the Gen. 13:2, 5-18 passage we hear of Abram and Lot who share a plot of land that can't support them both. Lot has A LOT; Abram tells him to pick the part he wants and it will be his. Then God gives Abram more and numerous descendants because he was generous. This idea is reflected in the Responsorial, Ps. 15: Who does justice (ie. is respectful, honest...) will live in the presence of the Lord and know life. In the Gospel Acclamation, Jn. 8:12, Jesus tells us "I Am light; whoever follows me will have light/life"
The "narrow gate"--what might that mean today? Maybe it is that we have to have our Focus on God --and others. "The Wide gate that leads to destruction" may be our self-centered gaze that takes all in but has no focus. It's like a map that shows it all, but doesn't point out where you are.
I invite you to reflect on the scriptures. They are like working with a puzzle. I know a key to all this is Jesus. He shows us the way IF we follow; then the darkness will not overtake us and we'll be able share the light with others and know life WITH Jesus (who is With us, In us, and working Through us).
What is your Focus? (Think of today, yesterday, last week...what's your Focus?)
Loving God, help me encounter Jesus in the Scriptures.
He is the Way; help me follow and so enter through the narrow gate.
I long to know Your Life, Your Light, Your Love. AMEN.
