The Narrow Door

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
The fact that the door opens to us for salvation doesn't depend on us...

Lk. 13:24

Strive to enter through the narrow door

I once tried to go through a spelunking exhibit at MOSI in Tampa. I was a bit larger than the average participant and the exhibit made clear that spelunking would not be a good hobby for me. I find it interesting that Jesus doesn't say "enter the narrow door" rather he calls on us to "strive for the narrow door." The fact that the door opens to us for salvation doesn't depend on us, Jesus alone can open that door. What we are called to is to strive. This means not being complacent in our faith, our prayer life, our moral life. We might be tempted to say "I'm only Human" but Jesus calls us beyond that and to strive for that divine life. We may find that striving for that narrow door is uncomfortable, seemingly impossible or tight and we may need to shed a few things in order to make it through, but the invitation remains the same. We are called to strive and to entrust our success to Him.
