The Light of the World

By Tyler Gates
This verse reminds me of the Easter Vigil Mass when the congregation first walks into the Church and it is pitch black...

Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

This verse reminds me of the Easter Vigil Mass when the congregation first walks into the Church and it is pitch black. As the priest and deacon process to the altar, they start to light people’s candles, and it is no longer dark. This is what Christ is for us in our world. We all know of the problems and evil that exist, but the one stable and consistent presence is Christ, and the light he sheds on our world. We are also called to be a light to others. We are to spread the Gospel and to live a life of charity. This is what we are called to as Christians. We are not expected to live this life by ourselves because we have Christ and our brothers and sisters in the faith. As we continue through this season of Lent, may we prepare our hearts and minds for the Resurrection of our Lord, who is the light of the world.

Where in our lives are we not open to the Lord’s mercy?

Lord, we ask that this Lenten season may be a time of penance for us to be open to your mercy. We also pray that you may help us to be open to your light, that we may be a light to others in our community. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
