The Insidious Nature of Hypocrisy

By Fr. Mike Muhr
Many religious leaders in Jesus' time honored the prophets of old by building and maintaining beautiful memorials to them...

"You bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building."

Luke 11:48

Many religious leaders in Jesus' time honored the prophets of old by building and maintaining beautiful memorials to them. They thought they were better, more sophisticated, more holy than their ancestors who persecuted and sometimes killed those sent by God with uncomfortable truths. Jesus bluntly tells them they aren't really honoring the past prophets if they're persecuting the present ones. And if they're persecuting the prophets, then those memorials are honoring the perpetrators of old. Bold words! Does it work? Are their eyes opened? Read again verses 53 and 54 to see if there is even a hint of a change of heart.

How can I know if I'm different? Do I know who the prophets of today are? Do I let myself be challenged? Are my eyes and ears open or closed?

Give me the courage, Lord, to listen to uncomfortable truths.
