The Idea of Hope

By Joshua Bertrand
As Christians we can rejoice that we have been blessed with receiving a hope that is based on that fact that we have met Jesus Christ...

Luke 10:23-24

Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

The season that leads up to the celebration of Christmas for many Christian denominations is called Advent. It's a time where we as Christians connect the vocation and mission of Christ as savior with our lives by focusing on something that can seem silly and small: the idea of hope. In a world that reduces the "real" to only what can be scientifically verified, society has lost this little orientation in life called hope, and we don't have to look far to see the terrible signs in our society that attest to this loss of hope across the nation. As Christians we can rejoice that we have been blessed with receiving a hope that is based on the fact that we have met Jesus Christ, something that ancient Israel awaited for generations. We have been granted a grace above that of millionaires, politicians, or celebrities. We have met Christ in the spirit, and now during this season we await in hope for His coming again in the flesh, and ultimately that joyful moment when in the future we may gaze upon Him, the source of all truth and love.
