The Healing Presence of God

By Spencer Grant
One of the most important matters of our faith, and one of the things I love most about our Lord...

“They scurried about the surrounding country . . . to wherever they heard he was.”

Mark 6:55

One of the most important matters of our faith, and one of the things I love most about our Lord, is that our God is so far beyond us yet continuously, throughout our checkered past, is always present to us. We see it in the first reading how the Lord rested on the footstool of the Ark of the Covenant, making himself available in the Holy of Holies to the people of Israel. David in his psalms extols God for his omnipresence: “O where can I go from your spirit, or where can I flee from your face? If I climb the heavens, you are there. If I lie in Sheol, you are there.”

The Son himself was made present to us by taking on human form—emptying himself and becoming flesh—so that he might raise the dignity of humanity through his own humanity. This same Son who dwelt among us makes himself truly present to us every day in the sacrifice of the altar and allows us to receive him so that our very bodies become tabernacles themselves and where we can experience, in the most intimate way possible, the healing presence of God, which he will never withhold from us whenever we approach him.

How can I keep God's constant presence in mind so that I may allow him to perform his healing work?

Lord Jesus, you make yourself present to us through the sacramental life of the Church, help us to always call to mind your saving presence that you continuously offer.

Spencer Grant is currently in his Senior year at St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami, Florida. He was born and raised in Tampa (or as he says Champa) and has been a parishioner at St. Timothy Parish in Lutz since he was eleven years old when his family joined the Church. When not busy with studies, Spencer can often be seen on the golf course or watching the Bucs, Lightning, or Rays (you know, winning teams) as he has been since childhood. Please continue to keep him in your prayers as he continues his discernment towards priesthood.
