The Great YES

By Bishop Gregory Parkes
When a message from God comes to you, do you recognize it?

Matthew 1:24  When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

Christmas is now but a few days away and most of us have their Christmas creche or nativity scene prominently on display:  the angel, Mary and Joseph, and the shepherds all in their respective places to adore the newborn king.  But much had to take place before the scene that we've grown to know and love.  Two "yeses" had to take place—Mary's and Joseph's.  Now Joseph was a good man, a righteous man, and didn't want to bring scandal and shame to Mary—although she had done nothing wrong.  But it was the angel that revealed to Joseph in a dream what he should do.  He could have done what he wanted, but chose the path that God had set before him.  It's interesting to note that in Matthew's gospel this weekend, we learn of the birth of Jesus, almost from the male point of view.  The writer begins with a genealogy beginning with Abraham and leading to the Holy Family.  There is no mention of Mary's perspective other than what was foretold by the prophets.  It's about Joseph worrying about what he's going to do in light of this difficult situation.  As many of us do when in a difficult position, I'm sure he prayed to God for an answer.  God gives him the answer through a divine messenger.

All of us struggle at some time with life situations, and many times we pray for guidance or even a sign.  That answer has been given to us in Jesus Christ, if we only turn to him with our entire life and being.  The trouble comes when we choose our will over God's will.  As advent draws to a close, pray for the courage to not run away from the problems or difficulties of life, but instead to run to the cradle where we encounter Jesus.  Like a newborn infant that you hold for the first time, hold the infant Jesus spiritually close to your heart.  Ask St Joseph and our Blessed Mother Mary to intercede for you when things seem desperate or hopeless. Remember they were young parents too and had their struggles.  One of the best gifts you can give God this Christmas is to come before the Lord with with humility, love and courage.  Give him your burdens and your heart and he will bless you in ways you may not even imagine!
