The Entrusted Mission of Jesus

By Fr. Drew Woodke
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrates his desire to cure people of illness and disease...

“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for the harvest”

Matthew 9:37

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrates his desire to cure people of illness and disease, but in today’s Gospel, his heart is moved with pity because he sees the people of Israel as sheep without a shepherd. So what does he do? He entrusts his mission to his disciple to drive out demons and to cure the sick.  “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.” Jesus gives us this promise that he will provide laborers to watch over his people. In the Church, we know these people to be our Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. However, God doesn’t force people into service for him; he invites. Today, ask the Lord how he’s calling you to serve his church, and if you or someone you know is called to serve as a deacon, priest, (or bishop), ask for the strength to courageously respond.

How has God invited you to serve?

Lord, we ask you to give us the strength to courageously respond to the invitation of service you have placed on our hearts.
