The Creator is Moved

By Joshua Bertrand
The dictionary defines pity as...

Luke 7: 13

When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, "Do not weep."

The dictionary defines pity as, "The feeling of sorrow and compassion caused by the suffering and misfortunes of others." We are usually fine with thinking that our friends and family can have pity on us when things are just, "not going our way." However, how do we feel about God having this same feeling toward us, and do we believe it? The reality is that God is always close to us, and always attentive to us, we are his creation.

In today's Gospel we hear about Jesus being moved with pity over the widow of Nain who is about to bury her only son, leaving her completely alone in the world. Jesus moved with pity raises him back to life. Jesus shares our humanity, and feels the pain of those around him, the second person of the Trinity, the creator of the universe looks upon me when I'm most in need, and is "moved with pity." This is the amazing aspect of our faith, our God enters into our history and humanity, so that we will never be alone, we have the ability to encounter him courageously in our lives, if we but turn to him in sincerity and love.
