The Broken Antenna

Joel 2:12

Yet even now—oracle of the LORD—return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.

It was a monumental error in my 8 year old mind. The radio antenna of our '88 Chevy Caprice station wagon could not bend that far. As I ran further away from the car the fear, doubts, guilt and shame mounted. I was scared—surely there would be consequences for my decision and I wasn't sure I wanted to reckon with them. Today we begin a period of penance, a season where you and I are invited to recognize our sinfulness and poor decision making. We are given the opportunity to reckon with the fact that we were made for Holiness and not selfishness, greatness and not mediocrity, service and not idleness. Placed before us is a time to pick up the broken pieces of our lives and present them humbly to the God who desires to restore us. The broken antenna, when brought to my parents attention, became a moment of reconciliation and deepening trust. Reckoning with our own sinfulness becomes a moment of tremendous grace in the life of a Christian, a moment where you and I can experience the sweetness of our God's mercy.
