Super Toned Statues

he Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, in all its majesty, is particularly manly in nature...

“Brothers and sisters, you are God’s building.”

1 Corinthians 3:9c

The Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, in all its majesty, is particularly manly in nature. When you walk in you are immediately greeted by 20 foot tall white stone statues of the twelve apostles, six flanking either side of the church from the nave to the center altar. It is impressive: these guys are in shape, and heroically depicted with the method of their death.  It used to confuse me why we celebrated the dedication of a building as a feast day.* After visiting St. John Lateran, however, I was inspired by the strength and endurance of the apostles, both physically and spiritually, and I am glad the church gives us this place as a spiritual home.

The readings today remind us that we have a responsibility to take care of the bodies God has given us, which are good and sacred, and become tabernacles when we receive Jesus in the Eucharist.  Do we treat God’s building, our very bodies, with dignity, honor, and respect?  We are also called to stay spiritually fit: regularly going to Mass, reading scripture, practicing silence with the Lord, examining our vices and growing in virtue, flexing those muscles by humble service to others.  One does not become toned by accident.  There is intentional repetition of workouts or physical labor.  Meal planning is involved.  The same is true spiritually.

We do not become holy by accident or luck.  We have to intentionally and repetitively build spiritual habits while asking Christ to build our foundation.  We have to ask Him to sculpt us: carving away areas of our sin and healing wounds or habits that do not serve us in our quest to holiness.

What is one thing you can do today or this week to help you grow in spiritual or physical fitness?

Jesus, sculpt me into your building.
