St. Catherine of Siena

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
She is truly one of the most quotable saints of our tradition...

Psalm 103:1-2

Bless the LORD, my soul;

all my being, bless his holy name!

Bless the LORD, my soul;

and do not forget all his gifts,

*Reading from the Memorial of St. Catherine of Siena

She is truly one of the most quotable saints of our tradition. St. Catherine of Siena, a Doctor of the Church (meaning that she herself lived a holiness which is outstanding even among the saints, possessed a unique depth of insight into the faith and had an extensive body of writings) lived in the 1300's and worked for the sanctification of the Church. I'd like to allow St. Catherine to speak for herself on how you and I might imitate this supreme example of a missionary disciple: "Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire." "Preach the Truth as if you had a million voices. It is silence that kills the world." "Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring." "You are rewarded not according to your work or your time but according to the measure of your love." "To the servant of God every place is the right place and every time is the right time." "Start being brave about everything. Drive out darkness and spread light. Don't look at your weaknesses. Realize instead that in Christ crucified you can do everything."
