Small Opportunities for Good

By Kody Dahlke
Today is the memorial of St. Anthony the Abbot who sold everything he had...

Mark 2:10-11

But that you may know

that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth"

–he said to the paralytic,

"I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home."

Today is the memorial of St. Anthony the Abbot who sold everything he had inherited after his parent's death to follow the life of Christ in the closest way he possibly could during the early years of the Church after Christ's resurrection. This led him out to the Egyptian desert where he lived with his brother monks in solitude to live his life in complete service to God. As we live our daily lives, we sometimes forget what it means to be Christian. We get caught in the grind and we miss out on opportunities to serve others and give ourselves to the Lord. St. Anthony gave up everything he had and sheltered orphaned children from Roman persecution during the early years of the Church. Let us not forget our heritage and try to do what God asks of us rather than giving in to what is easiest at the time. Look for those small opportunities every day to do something good for others and serve God so that God may bless you.
