Sleeping Soundly

By Joshua Bertrand
When I was a child I had an incredible ability to...

1 Thess 5: 9-10

For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him.

When I was a child I had an incredible ability to sleep through almost any noise. If I was sleeping there was no rousing me from my peaceful slumber. I really wish that I still possessed that special super power which I had as a young child.

Now, as an adult of 31 years old, I think and wonder why I was able to sleep so soundly then, but not now? Maybe it has something to do with the security and trust I felt when I was a small child. Knowingly sleeping under the watchful eye of Mom and Dad, I knew that nothing could ever harm me. Now, more then ever I need to trust in God, that no matter what I face in the world his love for me is without limit.

In today's scripture reading St. Paul is telling his young church in Thessalonica a similar message of hope and love, "°whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him." Let's give our worries and anxieties over to our Lord Jesus Christ, and trust in his Love, and then just maybe we can sleep a bit easier trusting in his love and mercy.
