Signs

By Benjamin Harris
Jesus is trying to make it clear that the world is being overcome by sin and evil...

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation..."

Luke 11:29-30

Jesus is trying to make it clear that the world is being overcome by sin and evil. He is displeased with what He is seeing. Jesus shows that He is the sign for the generation by comparing Himself to when Jonah was sent by God to preach repentance for the wicked men of Ninevah. Jesus, like Jonah, is now also calling the crowd to repentance, for He was sent by God to preach repentance not just to His city, but the entire world. This passage is applicable to today's generation. It is no secret that we, too, live in a wicked generation, one that is seeing a rise in sin and debauchery. It is a generation that, more and more often, takes its eyes off of God. Jesus is telling us too that He is the sign sent from God, and that we need to fix our hearts on Him. We need to give up our sinful ways and turn back to Him, seeking His love and mercy.

Am I attentive to the Lord's call to repentance?

Blessed Mother, pray for our generation, that we may turn to the Lord's mercy.

Signs

By Fr. Mike Muhr
I remember speaking with Sr. Briege McKenna, O.S.C., some time ago...

Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." - Matt. 12:38

I remember speaking with Sr. Briege McKenna, O.S.C., some time ago. She taught at St. Lawrence parish in Tampa when she first came from Ireland. Most of her ministry though has been to priests around the world. She's witnessed God's amazing healing power in people's lives!  She herself received a life-changing miracle. When we spoke, she was reminiscing about a person she met who posed the same wish as the scribes and Pharisees, "If only I could see a sign, my faith would be confirmed." That night someone was healed at the Mass, but by the next morning, the man who finally had his chance to see had new doubts, wondering if he could trust his eyes.

For those who believe, every day is bursting with signs of God's love!

Lord Jesus, strengthen my faith!
